How long will the Edinburgh rail disruption last?

Network Rail Scotland stated in a message on X:

“We are supporting emergency services in managing an incident at Edinburgh Waverley, resulting in trains being temporarily stopped. No services are operating or from Waver while the address the situation. We are striving to resume train operations as quickly as possible. Further updates will follow.” In a subsequent update, Network Rail Scotland confirmed: “We can now begin operating trains at Edinburgh Waverley. As the start of service was disrupted, we are working to bring trains from depots into the station and prepare them for service.”

ScotRail also noted: “Due to emergency services handling incident at Waver, all are experiencing delays, modifications, or cancellations.” Passengers are advised to continue to travel as planned, however their journey may be delayed, with disruption expected until 11:00 according to National Rail Enquiries.

Which routes are affected by the police incident?

The disruption affects Edinburgh rail passengers on major lines, with trains running to, from and through Edinburgh Waverley station cancelled, delayed or revised. Services running to and from East Lothian stations including North Berwick, Dunbar, Longniddry and Musselburgh are being cancelled, delayed or revised following the incident. Passengers travelling into Edinburgh for work or onward connections are being urged to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.

As reported by Network Rail Scotland, the incident has taken place near Dalmuir and means that trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Trains between Balloch and Airdrie, Dalmuir and Cumbernauld, Motherwell, Larkhall and Whifflet, Helensburgh Central and Edinburgh and between Oban and Glasgow Queen Street are being affected by the disruption.

What alternative travel arrangements are available?

Rail replacement bus services have been requested but are not yet running, according to service updates from rail operators. Any pre-purchased tickets can be used, at no extra cost, on alternative ScotRail services via any reasonable route in order to complete your journey. Passengers are advised to check National Rail for the latest information before travelling.

Network Rail said passengers should continue to travel as planned; however, their journey may be delayed. For those affected by the disruption, alternative routes via any reasonable ScotRail service are available at no additional cost with pre-purchased tickets.

What have rail operators said about the disruption?

As reported by Network Rail Scotland of X, the operator stated: “We are supporting emergency services in managing an incident at Edinburgh Waverley, resulting in trains being temporarily stopped. No services are operating or from Waver while the address the situation. We are striving to resume train operations as quickly as possible.”

ScotRail confirmed in a statement: “Due to emergency services handling incident at Waver, all are experiencing delays, modifications, or cancellations.” In a subsequent update, Network Rail Scotland confirmed: “We can now begin operating trains at Edinburgh Waverley. As the start of service was disrupted, we are working to bring trains from depots into the station and prepare them for service.”

Background of the Development

Rail disruption due to police incidents is not uncommon in the Edinburgh area. In April 2025, a similar police incident at Edinburgh Waverley Station halted services shortly after 8am, with Network Rail Scotland and ScotRail advising that trains were being brought to a stand as police rushed to the area. Approximately ten minutes later, Network Rail reported that services were returning to normal as the incident was resolved, with preparations to position trains in the station then in progress.

The current incident follows a pattern of service disruptions affecting Edinburgh rail passengers. In July 2026, lines at the capital’s main station were blocked due to a failure of the overhead line equipment, with Network Rail Scotland reporting a loss of power to the overhead wires at around 10am. This resulted in services running to and from East Lothian stations being cancelled, delayed or revised, with disruption expected to last until around 11:00.

Previous incidents have included fires near railway lines, such as the blaze next to the railway line near Helensburgh in July 2026, which caused trains to be cancelled between Dumbarton and Helensburgh. Network Rail said the fire was affecting ScotRail services as no trains could pass through, with Helensburgh to Edinburgh journeys terminating and resuming from Dumbarton Central.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect Commuters and Travellers

The ongoing rail disruption due to the police incident is likely to have significant implications for commuters and travellers in the Edinburgh area. Passengers travelling to, through or from Inverkeithing station who currently find the station not being served may face extended delays and journey cancellations throughout the day. The disruption affecting Edinburgh rail passengers on major lines means that those relying on these services for work commutes, business travel, or leisure journeys will need to make alternative arrangements.

Commuters may experience knock-on effects throughout the day, with the expected disruption until 11:00 potentially causing missed appointments, late arrivals at work, and disrupted travel plans. Those travelling into Edinburgh for work or onward connections who are urged to check before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys may find their daily routines significantly impacted.

The rail operators’ advice that pre-purchased tickets can be used at no extra cost on alternative ScotRail services via any reasonable route provides some flexibility, but passengers should still expect longer journey times and potential crowding on alternative services. The situation highlights the vulnerability of rail networks to unplanned incidents and the importance of passengers staying informed through official channels such as National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.

For regular commuters, such disruptions can accumulate into significant time losses and increased stress levels, potentially affecting productivity and work-life balance. Travellers with time-sensitive connections, such as those catching flights or attending important meetings, may face particularly challenging circumstances if alternative transport options are limited or unavailable.
