The intelligence-led police action took place on Thursday in the Wallyford area as part of proactive enforcement measures ahead of the annual Bonfire Night celebrations.

Following the search and subsequent recovery of the pyrotechnics, police confirmed that the individual was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

What details have Police Scotland released regarding the Wallyford raid?

As reported by Marie Sharp of the East Lothian Courier, Chief Inspector Ben Leathes, local area commander for East Lothian, stated that “it is an offence to buy, possess or use fireworks without a valid licence”.

Chief Inspector Leathes further warned the public that “anyone found selling or using fireworks illegally may face fines, seizure of items and potential prosecution”.

“The misuse of fireworks presents a significant risk to the public and can result in serious injury, fires and damage to properties. We remain committed to working with partner agencies to ensure everyone’s safety,” Chief Inspector Ben Leathes stated.

“I would ask anyone who knows about the illegal sale or use of fireworks to report it to Police Scotland on 101,” he added.

The authorities confirmed that officers acted directly on intelligence gathered locally, allowing them to secure a search warrant and execute the raid before the pyrotechnics could be distributed or used.

How does this operation fit into wider Scottish police enforcement?

As reported by David Campbell of the Glasgow Times, Chief Superintendent David Robertson stated that “as in previous years, local policing divisions will work with relevant agencies to engage with and reassure communities and encourage people to share information about anyone planning disorder between Halloween and Bonfire Night“.

Chief Superintendent Robertson emphasised that enforcement operations such as Operation Moonbeam will be active to maintain public safety.

He highlighted that “Firework Control Zones and Dispersal Zones will be in place in some areas” and added that “officers can also issue Dispersal Orders requiring individuals to leave an area or face further police action”.

“My message to anyone who thinks violence and disorder are acceptable is clear: if you choose to put the public or emergency services at risk, we will use every resource available to identify you and bring you to justice, including body-worn video and CCTV footage,” Chief Superintendent Robertson affirmed.

What is the background to this development?

In recent years, local councils across Scotland and Police Scotland have significantly intensified measures surrounding the sale, distribution, and public use of pyrotechnics.

Following recurring incidents of seasonal anti-social behaviour and public disorder during late October and early November, legislation was strengthened under the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act.

Under these statutory measures, local authorities are empowered to designate Firework Control Zones, within which setting off fireworks on private or public land without a permit is strictly prohibited.

Police forces across the country routinely launch dedicated operations, such as Operation Moonbeam, in the weeks preceding Bonfire Night to intercept unlicensed pyrotechnics before they reach local neighbourhoods.

What is the prediction for local residents and communities?

This recent enforcement action in Wallyford indicates that Police Scotland will maintain a zero-tolerance approach toward unlicensed pyrotechnics throughout the autumn season.

For the local community of East Lothian, increased police visibility and proactive searches are expected to reduce anti-social behaviour and lower the risk of property damage or physical injury during public gatherings.

However, residents may also experience stricter enforcement measures, such as temporary dispersal zones and identity checks in high-risk areas.

Retailers and private individuals involved in non-compliant sales or storage face heightened scrutiny, with authorities relying heavily on community intelligence and tip-offs to prevent unauthorized firework displays.
