EDINBURGH (Edinburgh Daily) September 12, 2026 — Edinburgh is set to host one of the most anticipated dates on the nation’s craft beverage calendar next month as The Big Swally returns to the capital. Co-organised by Dunfermline retailer Caledonian Craft Beer Merchant and local sour beer specialists Vault City Brewing, the gathering will take place at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

Organisers have confirmed that tickets for the daytime session have officially sold out following an overwhelming surge in consumer demand that temporarily caused the ticketing platform to crash upon release. Only a restricted allocation of passes remains available for the evening session.

As reported by Darren from Beer Today, and supported by reporting from Scottish Licensed Trade News (SLTN), the event brings together more than 150 distinct craft beers from leading independent breweries spanning the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and the United States. Admission passes are priced at £17.50 per person, which includes full entry, a commemorative branded festival glass, a complimentary first pour of an event-exclusive beer, and automatic entry into prize draws for promotional items and merchandise.

As cited by SLTN, Colin Gardner of the Caledonian Craft Beer Merchant stated:

“The Big Swally started in Dunfermline as a way to showcase great beer and bring people together and it has grown beyond anything we imagined. Last year’s atmosphere was incredible and to see the day session sell out so quickly again shows just how much people want to be part of it. The beer community is very special – like-minded independent breweries just want to help each other and it’s amazing to see. We are looking forward to welcoming breweries and beer lovers from all over the world back to Edinburgh. The response from breweries around the world has been phenomenal – there’s really no other beer gathering like this.”

Which Breweries and Food Vendors Are Attending the Festival?

The international gathering showcases a wide selection of brewing styles, ranging from traditional barrel-aged stouts and heavy IPAs to experimental fruit sours. Representing the domestic scene are prominent UK brands including Track Brewing Co, The Kernel, Northern Monk, Rivington Brew Co, and Vault City Brewing.

International participants travelling to the capital include United States producers Finback Brewery, Long Live Beerworks, and Grimm Artisanal Ales. European independent brewing is represented by Garage Beer Co (Barcelona, Spain), Brewski (Sweden), Amundsen Brewery (Norway), Seven Island Brewery (Corfu, Greece), Sudden Death Brewing Co (Lübeck, Germany), and Ārpus Brewing Co (Latvia).

Vault City Brewing, widely recognised for its fruit-heavy sours, plans to utilise the platform to launch an event-exclusive Raspberry and Vanilla sour, available exclusively to festival attendees. To accompany the beer selections, local street food traders Anto Tito’s Truck, Fred’s Backyard Barbecue, and Bia Edinburgh will be serving food inside the venue throughout the day and evening sessions.

What Is the Background of the Big Swally Development?

The Big Swally originated as an intimate regional showcase hosted in Dunfermline, Fife, created by the team at the Caledonian Craft Beer Merchant to spotlight small-scale, independent breweries. Following strong local reception and expanding visitor numbers, the event transitioned to the capital city to accommodate a larger audience and international participants.

Now hosted at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange, the gathering has developed into Scotland’s largest dedicated craft beer festival. The festival operates on an independent cooperative model where guest breweries, local food vendors, and retail merchants collaborate directly. Its rapid sell-out status reflects broader consumer shifts across Scotland towards premium, independent, and craft beverage experiences over mass-market commercial options.

What Is the Prediction for How This Development Affects the Local Audience and Craft Beer Sector?

The ongoing expansion and rapid ticket clearance of The Big Swally indicate several distinct operational impacts across key stakeholder groups:

  • Impact on Craft Beer Consumers: Local beer enthusiasts and visiting tourists benefit from direct access to rare, limited-run draught releases from international producers that rarely distribute to Scottish venues. However, the speed of day-session ticket sell-outs suggests that future iterations may need to implement expanded capacities or multi-day formatting to meet demand.
  • Impact on Independent Breweries: Participating producers gain vital exposure to a concentrated base of craft beverage consumers. The festival provides small, independent operations with a direct retail platform to test experimental releases—such as Vault City’s new sour—without substantial distribution overhead.
  • Impact on the Local Hospitality and Tourism Economy: The influx of domestic and overseas attendees provides seasonal footfall for West Edinburgh establishments, transportation providers, and hospitality services. The inclusion of local catering vendors directly feeds capital back into Edinburgh’s independent street-food sector.
