  • UK Government Statement: “Most accessible major sporting spectacle ever held in Britain”.
  • Status: Stages confirmed for hosting.

Edinburgh (Edinburgh Daily News) January 15, 2026 –  Edinburgh and Leeds will host the opening stages of the men’s and women’s Tour de France in 2027, hailed as the most accessible UK sporting event yet.

The Grand Departs of both races are anticipated to” pass within an hour’s drive of 60 of the population,” and over 900 kilometers( 559 long hauls) of public roadways will be open for free viewing.

The women’s Tour will begin in Leeds and go to Manchester, while the men’s event will begin in Edinburgh and end in Carlisle.

The Grand Departs for men and women will be held in the same nation outside of France for the first time in 2027.

The Tour de France Femmes will begin outside of mainland Europe for the first time.

British Cycling said it is seeking 7,000 volunteers to assist with route operations, spectator assistance, and community involvement for the Tours, which are the largest free-to-watch sporting events in the world.

The UK economy is expected to gain £150 million from the races, according to the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS).

Stephanie Peacock, the minister of sports, has committed £32 million in funding to assist the Grand Departs and their legacy.

“Together the races will be the most accessible major sporting spectacle ever held in Britain,”

the DCMS said.

An estimated 4.8 million people attended the three stages of the men’s stint that took place in England in 2014.

Stages in Scotland, England, and Wales will visit places like Edinburgh Castle, the Lake District, and the Brecon lights this time.

The UK has always welcomed the famed event” with passion and pride,” according to Tour de France general director Christian Prudhomme, and the routes named” reflect the beauty and diversity of Britain’s terrain.”

One of the most accomplished road cyclists in Britain, former world champion Lizzie Deignan, stated that the women’s edition’s debut in the UK “is a huge moment for the sport and an opportunity that will inspire countless women and girls to get on their bikes.”

What are the crowd management and road closure plans in host towns?

Host Municipalities like Edinburgh, Leeds, Carlisle, and Manchester are in early planning for crowd operation and road closures ahead of the 2027 Grand Départs, fastening on safety for millions anticipated along 900 km of routes.

Original councils coordinate with UK Sport, police, and ASO( Tour organizers) using templates from 2014 Yorkshire, emphasizing temporary full closures on race paths with divergences for residents and businesses.

Edinburgh deploys temporary one- way circles around the Castle launch; Leeds focuses on Pennine divergences with marshals. Final plans, duemid-2026, glass 2014’s success( no major incidents) while spanning for binary men’s/ women’s events and enhanced availability claims.
