Edinburgh (Edinburgh Daily News) January 14, 2026 – ScotRail has urged passengers to check their journeys ahead of major Network Rail improvement works between Edinburgh and Fife.
From January 17 to January 25 inclusive, there will be no trains running between Haymarket and Dalmeny while masterminds work continuously to modernize the route.
When feasible, the rail operator must operate diverted train services in addition to rail replacement buses that serve nearby stations. There are more possibilities for public transportation.
Although there are additional scheduled road closures at Admiralty in Fife, a ScotRail representative stated that any roadwork restrictions will be lifted before the first train replacement buses start running in the morning. “Satisfied that the works will not negatively affect their plans in the evenings,” the rail company says.
Consumers are encouraged to prepare ahead of time, probe their route before departing, and come acquainted with the alternate modes of transportation.
The ScotRail website provides a route- by- route breakdown.
The Fife design is the most recent stage of the Scottish Government’s larger action to decarbonize Scotland’s railroads, promoting further reliable, quieter, and cleaner trips.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said:
“Network Rail’s upcoming work is a vital stage in the Fife electrification project, paving the way for long-term improvements that will benefit customers for years to come.
We’ve put alternative travel plans in place to help keep people moving, and we encourage customers to take a moment to check their options before travelling. Some journeys may take longer than usual, so planning ahead will make things easier.
Our website and the ScotRail app have the latest information, and we’ll continue to provide clear updates and support throughout the works. We appreciate everyone’s patience as these essential upgrades are delivered.”
Will refunds or compensation be offered for delayed journeys?
Refunds and compensation can still be claimed during planned engineering workshops, but what you admit depends on( a) whether you choose not to travel at each, and( b) how late you arrive compared with the amended schedule.
Still, you are typically entitled to a full refund of the unused ticket from the retailer, without an admin figure, If your train is cancelled or your reservation is unworkable because of the engineering works.
For most National Rail drivers, including ScotRail, detention compensation is paid under the Delay Repay scheme, and the detention is measured against the schedule in force on the day( which may be a special engineering ‑ works schedule).
